Slow sinks, gurgling toilets, a shower full of standing water, or sewage coming up the lowest drain.
Drains, sewer & septic
What usually goes wrong
Start by noticing where the problem is. One slow drain is usually a local clog of hair, soap or grease. Several slow drains at once, or water coming up a tub when the toilet flushes, points to the main line, and you should stop using water until it is cleared.
In town, the main line runs to the city sewer, and old pipe can crack or fill with roots. Out in the country around Vale, New Plymouth and Weiser, homes are often on septic. A tank that is overdue for pumping, a wet or smelly spot over the drain field, or every drain slowing at once are signs to call. Never climb into or lean over an open septic tank; the gases are dangerous.
Skip chemical drain cleaners, which can hurt old pipe and septic systems, and keep wipes and grease out of the drains.
